Zwei Bettler sitzen nebeneinander in einer belebten Straße in Rom.
Vor dem einen steht ein Holzkreuz; vor dem anderen ein Davidstern.
Zahllose Passanten gehen an ihnen vorbei, betrachten die beiden – werfen ihre Münzen jedoch ausschließlich in den Hut des Bettlers mit dem Kreuz.
Ein katholischer Priester kommt vorbei, bleibt stehen und beobachtet eine Weile, wie die Menschenmengen dem Mann mit dem Kreuz großzügig Geld geben, während der Hut vor dem Davidstern völlig leer bleibt.
Schließlich tritt der Priester mitleidig an den Mann mit dem Davidstern heran und sagt:
„Mein lieber Mann, verstehen Sie das denn nicht? Sie sind hier in Italien, in einem zutiefst katholischen Land, im Herzen der Christenheit! Die Leute werden Ihnen doch keinen Cent geben, wenn Sie hier demonstrativ mit einem Davidstern sitzen – erst recht nicht direkt neben einem Mann mit einem Kreuz! Die Leute geben ihm das Geld doch schon aus purem Trotz!“
Der Bettler mit dem Davidstern hört sich die Belehrung geduldig an, dreht sich dann zu seinem Nachbarn mit dem Kreuz um und ruft:
„Moishe, schau dir den da an: Der will den Gebrüdern Goldstein erklären, wie Marketing funktioniert!“
Two beggars are sitting side by side on a busy street in Rome.
One has a cross in front of him; the other has a Star of David.
Many people pass by, look at both beggars, but put their money exclusively into the hat of the beggar sitting behind the cross.
A priest comes by, stops, and watches the crowds giving generously to the man behind the cross while not a single coin drops into the hat behind the Star of David.
Finally, the priest walks over to the beggar with the Star of David and says:
"My poor fellow, don't you understand? This is a Catholic country, this city is the very seat of Catholicism! People aren't going to give you money if you sit there with a Star of David in front of you – especially when you're sitting right beside a beggar who has a cross. In fact, they're probably giving to him just out of spite!"
The beggar behind the Star of David listens calmly to the priest, turns to the other beggar with the cross, and calls out:
"Moishe, look who's trying to teach the Goldstein brothers about marketing!"
